Walter Cunningham Jr. is a child who is almost as old as Jem but is in Scout's class. He lives on a farm. He is too poor to even pay off a 25-cent debt because the Great Depression hit his poor family hard. He doesn't take money because his family can't pay people back in cash. His father paid Atticus for his service for something a while back with some goods. Walter is invited over to the Finches' house once, after engaging in a fight with Scout, where he covers up all of his dinner with molasses, much to Scout's vocal dismay. This teaches Scout a lesson in humility and compassion.
Later, when I was supposed to be in bed, I went down the hall for a drink of water and heard Atticus and Uncle Jack in the living room:

Fahrenheit 451 is set in a grim alternate-future setting ruled by a tyrannical government in which firemen as we understand them no longer exist: Here, firemen don't douse fires, they ignite them. And they do this specifically in homes that house the most evil of evils: books.

It’s 2025. The US economy is in ruins but its citizens are distracted by a popular game show in which contestants are tracked and killed by professional hunters. Now it’s 2013 and I’ve just watched a (real) programme called Naked and Afraid, in which people are dropped naked on a desert island to see how they survive. So a programme modelled on The Running Man could well be on air by 2025, probably to be hosted by Dermot O’Leary. Arnold Schwarzenegger, who starred in the film version, went on to apply the dystopian lessons he learned to governing California.

They do not have a large impact on the story and function only to show the reader the contrast between the firemen who obediently do as they are told and someone like Montag, who formerly took pride in his job but subsequently realizes how damaging it is to society. Black is later framed by Montag for possessing books.

It is altogether mean, moody and magnificent and a fine addition to the gathering tide of female-led and female-driven dramas. Sharp Objects is part of a new breed of slickly produced but weighty vehicles for brilliant actors of beyond-starlet age that explore multiple plot strands, women’s stories and contemporary issues and prove, via overwhelming critical and popular acclaim, that talent survives beyond a lady’s 30th birthday. Seeing that on screen need not lead to mass retchings of fear and disgust.

Camille Preaker is a reporter, coming back from a psych ward she throws herself at her job. That's it until her boss sends her to her hometown where there seems to be a serial killer on the loose and has yet to be covered by the media. Her hometown is really secluded, not in the way of no nearby cities and that shit but in the way of secrets having the tendency to never get out of the town. People there turn their heads around when something bad is happening, denying having ever seen it. Is a girl having sex with 4 boys at plain sight and a neighbor sees it? No, it didn't happen. People have a short-term memory, like goldfish.

Quote: "The one place where a man ought to get a square deal is in a courtroom, be he any color of the rainbow, but people have a way of carrying their resentments right into a jury box." - Chapter 23 of To Kill a Mockingbird
This quotation, appearing in an early chapter, establishes a major idea in the novel. Here, Atticus encourages Scout to try and see things from another person's perspective by "walking in their shoes." Basically, he means that before you judge some one, you really have to think about where they're coming from. This is a lesson that Scout struggles to learn throughout the novel.

But Bradbury’s key inspiration was the invasion of seven-inch black-and-white televisions into people’s homes. Bradbury was no Luddite. He wrote screenplays, including one for an adaptation of “Moby-Dick.” He also wrote 65 episodes of a television series, “The Ray Bradbury Theater.” But in “Fahrenheit 451” Bradbury was warning us about the threat of mass media to reading, about the bombardment of digital sensations that could substitute for critical thinking.

That spring was a good one: the days grew longer and gave us more playing time. Jem's mind was occupied mostly with the vital statistics of every college football player in the nation. Every night Atticus would read us the sports pages of the newspapers. Alabama might go to the Rose Bowl again this year, judging from its prospects, not one of whose names we could pronounce. Atticus was in the middle of Windy Seaton's column one evening when the telephone rang. He answered it, then went to the hat rack in the hall. "I'm going down to Mrs. Dubose's for a while," he said. "I won't be long."

Captain Beatty is Montag's boss. Outwardly he reassures Montag, yet there's a quiet but distinct undertone of threat to what he says. When Beatty stares at Montag, it's almost as if Beatty can sense what Montag is thinking about. Beatty's phoenix insignia symbolizes rebirth through fire—but the renewed world promised by the firemen is one without books. This image of a phoenix will be contrasted with another image of a phoenix at the end of the novel.

"One of the best and most disturbing books I have read in a long time...Flynn never stoops to the gratuitous, and the torment produces haunting characters that hung around my imagination long after I had finished the book. Her skillful blending of old tragedies with new culminated in an 'oh-my-gosh' moment that I never saw coming. This book simply blew me away."
In 2018, Gillian Flynn’s mission to create disturbed or disturbing female characters is certainly less innovative than it felt to the author twelve years ago. Particularly in television drama, it’s easier to find dysfunctional women than well-adjusted ones (even Betty Draper in Mad Men shoots a gun), and the plotlines of a variety of recent shows center on female trauma and violence. Alison (Ruth Wilson) in The Affair cuts stripes into her inner thigh for years after her young son dies, the pain prompting her to stray from her husband; Cora (Jessica Biel) in The Sinner slaughters a man in broad daylight without apparent motive, and the entire series is about uncovering the traumatic experience that motivated the crime; Jessica Jones, in her titular role, binge-drinks away a history of sexual abuse.

Vonnegut’s satirical, metafictional novel leaves protagonist Billy Pilgrim “unstuck in time” after his dealings with the alien Tralfamadorians. The nonlinear novel was absolutely revolutionary when published and remains one of the great works of 20 th century literature today.
Bradbury described himself as "a preventor of futures, not a predictor of them." [88] He did not believe that book burning was an inevitable part of the future; he wanted to warn against its development. [88] In a later interview, when asked if he believes that teaching Fahrenheit 451 in schools will prevent his totalitarian [2] vision of the future, Bradbury replied in the negative. Rather, he states that education must be at the kindergarten and first-grade level. If students are unable to read then, they will be unable to read Fahrenheit 451. [89]

Atticus, being the gentleman he was, never acknowledged the payments from Mr. Cunningham. He knew that a conversation would only serve to embarrass him and emphasize the fact that he was poor and couldn't pay. Atticus tried to instill this understanding in Scout, when she mistakenly insisted that Atticus speak to Mr. Cunningham on the porch when he was trying to leave his payment. Atticus gently lets Scout know that in the future it is better to let him leave his payments anonymously.
Bradbury’s books of short stories include The Martian Chronicles (1950) , The Illustrated Man (1951), and I Sing the Body Electric (1969). As always in his writing, technology takes a backseat to the human stories. He wrote his first novel, Fahrenheit 451 (1953),on a rental typewriter in the basement of UCLA's Lawrence Clark Powell Library, where he had taken refuge from a small house filled with the distractions of two young children. Ballantine editor Stanley Kauffman, later the longtime film critic for the New Republic, flew out to Los Angeles to go over the manuscript with Bradbury, plying the sweet-toothed perfectionist author with copious doses of ice cream. The book came out to rapturous reviews. To this day it sells at least 50,000 copies a year and has become a touchstone around the world for readers and writers living under repressive regimes.
