In a more mixed assessment, USA Today 's Kelly Lawler gave the series a rating of two stars out of four and said, "Although the eight-episode series eventually perks up, in the seven parts made available for review it's often a lazy, dreary summer mystery that feels exploitative of the violence it depicts. It's a disappointing adaptation of its source material, with all the gravitas of a trashy beach read." [44] In a further ambivalent editorial, TVLine 's Dave Nemetz gave the series a "B-" grade and said, "There's enough intriguing material in Sharp Objects to keep me watching until the end; at the very least, it’s still an artfully shot showcase for some fine acting, which isn’t the worst thing in the world. But considering the big names involved and the promising source material, it can’t help but feel like a letdown." [45] Ratings [ edit ] No.

I really appreciate it when a book respects the intelligence of its readership. If a book is going to be "experimental" in any way, I love those that throw you into a world with no explanations - a literary baptism of fire (ie: Orwell's "Animal Farm"). Catch-22 is one of those books, and that's part of the reason why I thought it was so amazing!

I liked the psychological aspect of this novel as well. Flynn skillfully portrays how differently people react to the abuse in their lives - some direct the pain onto themselves, some inflict it on others - and both ways are equally damaging to one's psyche.

Loved the first episode, but can already tell I’ll have to rewatch because after reading through comments I missed a ton, such a good problem to have though! Can’t wait for the next episode.
I'm not going home. Not really.
It's hard to describe briefly just how gloriously, envelopingly hilarious this logic becomes as the novel unfolds. (I can't remember another book which I've had to put down so frequently to get on with the serious business of guffawing.) Its core paradox – that insanity is sanity – burrows inside everything.

Harry stays at Hogwarts with Ron over the Christmas holidays and spends time playing wizard’s chess and researching Nicolas Flamel, who Hagrid accidentally mentioned in connection with the package from Vault 713. On Christmas morning, Harry is surprised to receive numerous presents, including a rare invisibility cloak. The note accompanying the cloak says that it belonged to Harry’s father. That night, Harry decides to try out his invisibility cloak and comes across a large mirror in the middle of a room. When he looks in the mirror, he sees his dead parents and other unknown relatives staring back at him. The next night, Harry rushes back to the room to see his family in the mirror and is surprised by Professor Dumbledore, who has been waiting for him. Dumbledore explains that the Mirror of Erised reveals the deepest desires of a person’s heart but cannot give truth or knowledge. Dumbledore also tells Harry that the mirror will be moved to a new location the following day, and Harry should not try to find it again.

The finale stuck close to the plot of Flynn’s book while being presented in a different way, particularly at the very end. Camille and her cop lover Richard Willis (Chris Messina) independently figure out that Adora killed Camille’s sister Marian years ago through Munchausen syndrome by proxy — a compulsion to make her own child sick in order to feel needed. She nearly does the same to Camille before Willis and Camille’s editor Frank Curry (Miguel Sandoval) burst into the Crellin house to rescue Camille and Amma and arrest Adora for the deaths of Marian and the two recently murdered girls, Natalie and Ann.

When you take a look at the world wide success of “Harry Potter”, you should not forget the marketing strategies. The question is how to create a success? Many people say that there is no marketing. It is rumoured that the success of Harry Potter books is made by the children talking about these books on the playground. But the success is not only created by mouth propaganda. 26 6.1 The Rowling-legend

One of my favourite books is Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone by J.K. Rowling. It is a story about Harry Potter, an orphan brought up by his aunt and uncle because his parents were killed when he was a baby. Harry is unloved by his uncle and aunt but everything changes when he is invited to join Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and he finds out he's a wizard. At Hogwarts Harry realises he's special and his adventures begin when he and his new friends Ron and Hermione attempt to unravel the mystery of the Philosopher's Stone.

Catch-22 contains allusions to many works of literature. Howard Jacobson, in his 2004 introduction to the Vintage Classics publication, wrote that the novel was "positioned teasingly ... between literature and literature's opposites – between Shakespeare and Rabelais and Dickens and Dostoevsky and Gogol and Céline and the Absurdists and of course Kafka on the one hand, and on the other vaudeville and slapstick and Bilko and Abbott and Costello and Tom and Jerry and the Goons (if Heller had ever heard of the Goons)." Another consequence of the story’s baggy occupation of eight episodes is that it leaves ample time to develop the character of Wind Gap itself, even surpassing the detail provided in the book. While Flynn writes only briefly about the town’s history, one entire episode of the show is devoted to an event on Adora’s lawn called Calhoun Day, which celebrates the bravery of a girl who refused to reveal to Union soldiers the location of her Confederate husband, even when they repeatedly raped her. The show is more explicit, too, about the town’s persistent legacy of racism: in preparation for the antebellum-themed party, Adora orders around her black maid; and the only sympathetic woman among Camille’s old friends, whom they bullied in high school—and whom Flynn merely describes as an “eager and awkward…girl of mid-tier popularity”—is played in the show by a black woman (Hilary Ward), which casts the mean girls’ antics in a different light. The choice of the producers to amplify Wind Gap’s background, and the not-so-quiet racism it gave birth to, does not ultimately affect the story’s conclusion (which is loyal to the book) but it productively enriches Flynn’s narrative, by placing her characters in a social context wider than just their constrictive families.

Hi Janine,
Little buddy read with Her Majesty La Lionne and Jerry on January 31st!! :D This is my third Gillian Flynn book, after Gone Girl and Dark Places. The first one blew my mind, the second one freaked me out a little and this one really scared me. Sure, after reading 5% of it I was like --a creepy story with the potential of giving me special nightmares, but by 90% I was like WTF did I just read?? All the characters were disturbing, especially even the children. Allow me to start with Camille. She's a Little buddy read with Her Majesty La Lionne and Jerry on January 31st!! :D
