Emily Brontë’s complex, Gothic-flavoured novel makes an interesting companion to her sister’s more straightforwardly romantic Jane Eyre. In Wuthering Heights, Cathy and Heathcliff, childhood friends, are separated by class and their own questionable decisions; however, their all-consuming passion for one another is something which quite literally never dies. It’s a story of desire but also of the damaging effects of abuse and isolation on children.

Andre Breton’s dreamlike account of a man falling in love with a woman amongst the beauty of 1920s Paris was the first Surrealist romance ever written. The narrative is combined with 44 photographs capturing people, events and places that the couple encounter along the way.

A series that I didn’t see mentioned is Tui Sutherland’s “Avatars” trilogy. The 3rd book can be hard to find, and they are a little younger than Hunger Games, but they are still quite good.

I usually try not to include two books from the same author on a single list. However, in this case, I truly feel Mitch Albom’s The Five People You Meet in Heaven deserves a mention here. has a large collection of used books, ranging from college textbooks to classic fiction and everything in between.

As you can see, there is no single set of features which define a classic book. They’re not all written by long-dead white British men – they’re simply great stories which have stood the test of time, and which everyone can read and enjoy.
When it comes to engaging young people of all ages and motivations, Jessica Ireland is “The Perfect Storm” of an educator. She combines creativity, kindness, patience, innovation, reality, encouragement, flexibility, and (when appropriate) firmness to help each young person she’s been entrusted with ultimately understand that each one of them possesses unlimited potential, and the ability to succeed in whatever endeavor(s) they choose to undertake, both inside and outside of a formal education setting.

Key difference: McEwan's book is deliciously cerebral and interior, giving the characters' conflicts, questions, and changes vigorous life. Joe Wright's film externalizes these inner workings with a spare, lush cinematic language.

The book is structured as three alternating cycles of oracles of judgment followed by oracles of redemption. The prophet self-identifies as coming from an agricultural region, and his book is filled with images from nature and farming. The visualization shows the estimates and projections of the share of individuals, across countries, who have no education. These figures, from The International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA), suggest that we should see rates of education increasing as the world develops – and by 2050, only five countries are likely to have a rate of no education above 20%: these are Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, Guinea, Mali and Niger.

The most recent book on my list is Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy from 1974 and I am a bit worried that might be a little recent for the 'classic' tag. The oldest is Don Quixote, from 1605, which I read as a child and didn't remotely consider as old-fashioned. Madness never goes out of fashion even if chivalry has.

For graphic novel fans, Battle Royale is also a manga series (which manages to be both pretty and exceptionally bloody – again, only for older young adults). 2. Gone by Michael Grant
