Since COVID-19 began upending our lives and throwing millions of people out of work, Google has seen an explosion in searches for online courses. But we're not seeing any uptick in searches for degree programs. How can this be when we've just entered the biggest recession in nearly a century (and the most sudden in history), when enrollment in higher education institutions has always been counter-cyclical, and when one-third of respondents to a new Strada survey say they'll "need additional education or training to find another job with the same wages or income"?

Even before the pandemic, prospective students were increasingly focused on employment outcomes. A generation ago, only about 50% of students enrolling in degree programs indicated that employment was their primary or sole motivation. Recent surveys consistently reported that number north of 90%. And with tens of millions of Americans newly unemployed or underemployed due to COVID-19, the market of potential students is now even more employment-centric.

We create a tabular file doi.tsv.xz that contains a binary indicator (coded as 0/1) of whether each Crossref DOI is in Sci-Hub's repository. The general workflow we followed to compute coverage was to subset the DOI dataset for the relevant DOIs (e.g. all DOIs published in 2016) and take the sum/mean of the binary membership column. These operations made heavy use of pandas.DataFrame.join to incorporate additional information about DOIs and pandas.DataFrame.groupby to compute coverage for all possible subsets at once.

The bonnets that Handmaids wear are modelled on Old Dutch Cleanser's faceless mascot, which Atwood in childhood found frightening. [7] Fertile women whose social function is to bear children for infertile Wives. Handmaids dress in ankle-length red dresses, white caps, and heavy boots. In summer, they change into lighter-weight (but still ankle-length) dresses and slatted shoes. When in public, in winter, they wear ankle-length red cloaks, red gloves, and heavy white bonnets, which they call "wings" because the sides stick out, blocking their peripheral vision and shielding their faces from view. Handmaids are women of proven fertility who have broken the law. The law includes both gender crimes, such as lesbianism; and religious crimes, such as adultery (redefined to include sexual relationships with divorced partners since divorce is no longer legal). The Republic of Gilead justifies the use of the handmaids for procreation by referring to two biblical stories: Genesis 30:1–13 and Genesis 16:1–4. In the first story, Jacob's infertile wife Rachel offers up her handmaid Bilhah to be a surrogate mother on her behalf, and then her sister Leah does the same with her own handmaid Zilpah (even though Leah has already given Jacob many sons). In the other story, which appears earlier in Genesis but is cited less frequently, Abraham has sex with his wife's handmaid, Hagar. Handmaids are assigned to Commanders and live in their houses. When unassigned, they live at training centers. Handmaids who successfully bear children continue to live at their commander's house until their children are weaned, at which point they are sent to a new assignment. Those who do produce children, however, will never be declared "Unwomen" or sent to the Colonies, even if they never have another baby. Aunts Trainers of the Handmaids. They dress in brown. Aunts promote the role of Handmaid as an honorable way for a sinful woman to redeem herself. They also police the Handmaids, beating some and ordering the maiming of others. The aunts have an unusual amount of autonomy, compared to other women of Gilead. They are the only class of women permitted to read although this is only to fulfil the administrative aspect of their role. ("The Aunts are allowed to read and write." Vintage Books, p. 139. However, on p. 100 of the Vintage Books edition: "They played it (the Beatitudes) from a disc; the voice was a man's." In the Anchor Books edition: "They played it (the Beatitudes) from a tape, so not even an Aunt would be guilty of the sin of reading. The voice was a man's. (p.89.)") Marthas They are older, infertile women who have domestic skills and are compliant, making them suitable as servants. They dress in green smocks. The title of "Martha" is based on the story of Jesus at the home of Martha and Mary ( Gospel of Luke 10:38–42), where Jesus visits Mary, sister of Lazarus and Martha; Mary listens to Jesus while Martha works at "all the preparations that had to be made". Econowives Women married to men of lower-rank, not members of the elite. They are expected to perform all the female functions: domestic duties, companionship, and child-bearing. Their dress is multicoloured red, blue, and green to reflect these multiple roles, and is made of notably cheaper material.

But how did Offred/June get here? In Atwood’s book, she remembers flashes of her pre-Gilead life with her husband, Luke, and young daughter, Hannah — a day at the beach, a trip to the aquarium, nights out with friends — and now we get to actually see them. Take the opening moments of this episode: June, her husband, and their young daughter are fleeing by car, trying to get to the Canadian border. When their car runs off the road, Luke tells them to run and stays behind — but June doesn’t get far before gunshots ring out behind them. You can see the anguish in Moss’ eyes and the quick decision that she can’t focus on it now, picking up the little girl and going forward. (Side note: Moss’ acting on this show, at least from the three episodes I’ve seen so far, is tremendous. There’s so much Offred can’t say out loud, and you can see it all in her expressions, or a clenched fist, and the way she speaks in voice-over.) Of course, they don’t make it to the border. Gilead officials catch them, forcibly separate mother and daughter, and take them back to the fundamentalist regime they were trying to escape.
And for all the researchers at Western universities who use Sci-Hub instead, the anonymous publisher lays the blame on librarians for not making their online systems easier to use and educating their researchers. “I don’t think the issue is access—it’s the perception that access is difficult,” he says.

For her actions in creating Sci-Hub, Elbakyan has been called a hero and "spiritual successor to Aaron Swartz" who in 2010 downloaded millions of academic articles from JSTOR. [9] [66] She has also been compared to Edward Snowden who has sought safety in Russia after having made numerous documents public in violation of American law. [66] She has also been called a modern-day " Robin Hood" and a "Robin Hood of science". [67]

Whatever his definition of “activity” is (and if it’s not downloads, what is it?), “Frank”‘s claim that 50%+ of it is by Western academics **who wish to bash commercial publishers** has no credibility because he has produced no evidence of the motivation of these people. No survey results. No interview results. It’s just yet another unsubstantiated conspiracy theory. A great pity, as he weakens the excellent arguments against Sci-Hub (such as the original posting suggested) by promoting conspiracy theories.

One method Sci-Hub uses to bypass paywalls is by obtaining leaked authentication credentials for educational institutions ( Elbakyan, 2017). These credentials enable Sci-Hub to use institutional networks as proxies and gain subscription journal access. While the open access movement has progressed slowly ( Björk, 2017), Sci-Hub represents a seismic shift in access to scholarly literature. Since its inception, Sci-Hub has experienced sustained growth, with spikes in interest and awareness driven by legal proceedings, service outages, news coverage, and social media ( Figure 1 and Figure 1—figure supplement 1). Here we investigate the extent to which Sci-Hub provides access to scholarly literature. If Sci-Hub’s coverage is sufficiently broad, then a radical shift may be underway in how individuals access scholarly literature.

There is, by the way, a logical inconsistency in Sci-Hub propaganda. Al of its credentials, hundreds of thousands, are willingly donated by sympathetic Western academics. Most users are in the developing world, and lack such credentials to donate.

More evidence collected shows that credentials that get into Sci-Hub’s hands are subsequently shared widely. How do we know? We caught them. When a particular set of credentials had been stolen and used first by Sci-Hub, the password was reset. For a short period afterward, the stolen credentials were monitored. The log file analysis revealed that there were 302 further attempts to access the site using the stolen credentials. The access points came from 12 countries including the United States, China, Thailand and Hong Kong.

A great starting point to research potential support options is to review the particular websites for the schools and universities you are interested in. The right time to look for financial support is well in advance of the start of the course. It can be very hard to find funding, particularly midway through the academic year. The following chapters take place in the present time, and still fail to explain when and where the story is taking place up to chapter five, but as the narrator explains certain details throughout the chapters, more and more details begin to unravel. After chapter one’s flashback, the narrator goes on to explain her current living condition in a house under the ownership of a commander and his wife. She describes her room as being somewhat similar to a prison cell, even thought she recalls her “aunt” from the Red Center expressing the importance of keeping positive attitudes during the tough times. The six people people who live in the house are the commander, Serena Joy, Rita, Cora, Nick, and Offred. The commander is the owner of the house, and Serena Joy a retired famous gospel singer and the commander’s “wife” although her “job” does not include having sex with him. Rita and Cora are what are known as “Marthas,” or household servants. Their jobs include cooking and cleaning, and the narrator recalls their uniforms being green in color. Nick is the guardian of the faith and lives above the garage of the house. The narrator, who’s name we find out to be Offred, is the handmaid of the household. At first, the term “handmaid” is fairly unclear, but as hints arise throughout chapters 2-10, we find out that a handmaid is basically a “sex servant” for the commander, and her uniform consists of a long red gown and white “wings” that cover her face. This uniform serves to cover all parts of a woman’s body to prevent any sort of sexual tension of men. Offred is a part of the household because she is valued for the power she still has to become pregnant, unlike many of the community’s women for reasons not yet explained (in the book at least).

Ready Player One is a 2018 American science fiction adventure film directed by Steven Spielberg, from a screenplay by Zak Penn and Ernest Cline based on Cline's 2011 novel of the same name. It stars Tye Sheridan, Olivia Cooke, Ben Mendelsohn, Lena Waithe, T.J. Miller, Simon Pegg, and Mark Rylance. It takes place in 2045, when much of humanity uses the virtual reality software OASIS (Ontologically Anthropocentric Sensory Immersive Simulation) to escape the desolation of the real world. Orphaned teenager Wade Watts (Sheridan) finds clues to a hidden game that promises OASIS's ownership to the winner, and he and four allies try to complete it before a corporation run by businessman Nolan Sorrento (Mendelsohn) can do so.

As academics, your institution is paying publishers to get access to journal (and you may loose access to electronic versions if the institution stops paying contrary to paper versions), you write papers for free, you review papers for free, you are part of the editorial board of the journal for free (or some crumbs for travelling to a conference), as an editor you spend most of your life managing people for a really small stipend compared to the time spent. People still do it because they believe it is useful. But current openaccess solutions that cost sometimes $5,000 are not a solution either. In both options the publishers is making the money and the researchers or their institution have to pay... There are legitimate concerns about scihub from some librarians as it doesn't allow a correct attribution of funds to ressources that are needed by researchers and there are some concerns of researchers credentials being stolen and shared (willingly and not) by scihub but also less reputable actors. University libraries are struggling with credentials reuse as they are the ones that get punished by the publishers with ban of ips or full institutions and harder contracts negotiations. Talking about those negotiations, they are all confidential, despite often using state or federal funds there is no way to know how much, what and how these secret deals are negotiated. So we still don't have a good solution. Preprints are useful, but we had already too many publications to skim through and the fact that anybody can publish anything with no filters makes finding meaningful information much harder....

Sci-Hub’s coverage was higher for closed and green articles than for hybrid or bronze articles. Furthermore, Sci-Hub’s coverage of closed articles was similar to its coverage of green articles ( Figure 7). These findings suggest a historical pattern where users resort to Sci-Hub after encountering a paywall but before checking oaDOI or a search engine for green access. As such, Sci-Hub receives requests for green articles, triggering it to retrieve green articles at a similar rate to closed articles. However, hybrid and bronze articles, which are available gratis from their publishers, are requested and thus retrieved at a lower rate.
In June 2017, the American Chemical Society (ACS) filed a lawsuit against Sci-Hub in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia, alleging copyright and trademark infringement; it sought judgment US$4.8 million from Sci-Hub in damages, and Internet service provider blocking of the Sci-Hub website. [24] On 6 November 2017, the ACS was granted a default judgment, and a permanent injunction was granted against all parties in active concert or participation with Sci-Hub that has notice of the injunction, "including any Internet search engines, web hosting and Internet service providers, domain name registrars, and domain name registries", to cease facilitating access to the service. We managed our computational environment using Conda, allowing us to specify and install dependencies for both Python and R. We performed our analyses using a series of Jupyter notebooks. In general, data integration and manipulation were performed in Python 3, relying heavily on Pandas, while plotting was performed with ggplot2 in R. Tabular data were saved in TSV (tab-separated values) format, and large datasets were compressed using XZ. We used Git Large File Storage (Git LFS) to track large files, enabling us to make nearly all of the datasets generated and consumed by the analyses available to the public. The Sci-Hub Stats Browser is a single-page application built using React and hosted via GitHub Pages. Frontend visualizations use Vega-Lite ( Satyanarayan et al., 2017).
