It was interesting to see just how many of these books I myself had read and book-talked, as well as how many have been favorites two or more years in a row. There were also many of these books that were book-talked by more than one student such as Until Friday Night, Yummy, Scythe, and the Mortal Instruments. Yet this also seemed to be the year where students continued to read about stories that they may not be familiar with themselves, however, despite my book talks, there are still certain gaps in what our students are loving. I hope you find their recommendations helpful. This year, they created a slide to speak about their choice. Scroll down to see the list.

Why me? I’ve been working on IP intrusions for many years, limiting the damage caused by intrusions to publishers and libraries. In recent years that’s meant spending a lot of time looking at Sci-Hub. I continue to work with legal authorities in the US and UK, as well as with publishers, individual libraries and consortia. Our aim is to make all of these stakeholders aware of the threats, to expose cybercrime, and to share information across the academic research community to help protect publishers, authors, researchers, and library patrons.

Atwood’s novel, published in 1985, has sold millions of copies and been translated into dozens of languages, so you may know the broad strokes of the story it tells. The time is the near future. The place is Gilead, located in what was formerly New England. It is governed by the Sons of Jacob, religious fundamentalists whose rigid new society evokes a Puritan past. (People greet one another with stilted imprecations: “Under his eye,” they say, and answer, “Blessed be the fruit.”) Unspecified ecological disasters have led most couples to become infertile, and this widespread infertility is blamed on women. Women who are still able to reproduce are rounded up to become Handmaids, enslaved breeders for Commanders whose wives are “barren.” If the Handmaids object, they can be disappeared along with Unwomen (feminists), Gender Traitors (lesbians), and other enemies of the state. Some women become Marthas, or domestic servants; some female zealots work as Aunts, breaking Handmaids into obedience at the Rachel and Leah Center. These stratifications keep Gilead’s women occupied with their own alliances and enmities; they do not rise against the men who have subjugated them.

"I don't know if he would want to dive right back in, but maybe in a couple years, he might have recovered enough. I really hope that, if we do make another one, that he would do it. Michael Crichton, the novelist, is the only one to get that lucky and have two of his books made into movies by Steven, but maybe I'll get lucky, too," he explained.
Sci-Hub’s coverage was higher for closed and green articles than for hybrid or bronze articles. Furthermore, Sci-Hub’s coverage of closed articles was similar to its coverage of green articles ( Figure 7). These findings suggest a historical pattern where users resort to Sci-Hub after encountering a paywall but before checking oaDOI or a search engine for green access. As such, Sci-Hub receives requests for green articles, triggering it to retrieve green articles at a similar rate to closed articles. However, hybrid and bronze articles, which are available gratis from their publishers, are requested and thus retrieved at a lower rate.
The legality of the site itself is dubious, but there are not likely legal consequences for simply using the site, especially if there is no monetary gain for the user.

We used DOIs (Digital Object Identifiers) to uniquely identify articles. The Sci-Hub and LibGen scimag repositories also uniquely identify articles by their DOIs, making DOIs the natural primary identifier for our analyses. The DOI initiative began in 1997, and the first DOIs were registered in 2000 ( International DOI Foundation, 2017; Wang, 2007). Note that DOIs can be registered retroactively. For example, Antony van Leewenhoeck’s discovery of protists and bacteria — published in 1677 by Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of London ( van Leewenhoeck, 1677) — has a DOI (10.1098/rstl.1677.0003), retroactively assigned in 2006.

Regarding the hypothesis, "the more likely a paper is to be found on the web, the less likely it is in Sci-Hub", we evaluate this directly in the "Coverage by category of access status" section. This hypothesis appears true for most types of gratis web access. Compared to closed articles, bronze, hybrid, and gold OA articles are less likely to be in Sci-Hub. However, green articles (available without charge, but not from the publisher) do not seem have lower coverage than closed articles in Sci-Hub. The conclusion from the reviewers' comparison could therefore be rephrased as "the less gratis availability of a discipline's articles on the web (according to oaDOI), the greater the coverage on Sci-Hub." One possibility is that researchers from disciplines with poor oaDOI coverage more frequently encounter access problems, leading to greater awareness and usage of Sci-Hub. https://doi.org/10.7554/eLife.32822.022 Article and author information

Yes, I remember :) Absolutely ridiculous that displaying a link to a site that could be used for copyright infringement should itself be infringing. It will be nicer if whole sci-hub is able to move to IPFS network and accessible through a domain. The problem is IPFS do not offer anonymity of the nodes hosting the content. So publisher can sue any of the nodes being part of the network providing a chunk of data. Even though they are not liable as intermediary, but now a days it's pretty hard to defend in court and like the default judgement in case of sci-hub will happen with the node owners.
No. 3 is not exactly a denial of hacking and phishing, is it?
“Springer (which completed a merger with Nature’s publisher this month) and Russia’s science minister both say that they are hoping to resolve the problem soon. But the missed payment and subsequent loss of access is one more example of how Russia’s weak economic situation is affecting scientists, who are already finding it harder to purchase and import overseas equipment, says Fyodor Kondrashov, a Russian biologist with the Centre for Genomic Regulation in Barcelona, Spain.”
It has been reported, fact, but Universities are struggling with all the hacks they face and are doing their best to try and keep their patrons credentials safe and secure. It is hard for them when they are facing hackers who force their way in or carry out spear fishing attacks or simply phish for credentials! We are talking about a very sophisticated system here with huge resources. We are trying to help them with the creation of a threat intelligence alerting system that can be used by libraries and publishers alike.

We find strong evidence that Sci-Hub is primarily used to circumvent paywalls. In particular, users accessed articles from toll access journals much more frequently than open access journals. Additionally, within toll access journals, Sci-Hub provided higher coverage of articles in the closed and green categories (paywalled by the publisher) as opposed to the hybrid and bronze categories (available gratis from the publisher). Accordingly, many users likely only resort to Sci-Hub when access through a commercial database is cumbersome or costly. Finally, we observed evidence that Sci-Hub’s primary operational focus is circumventing paywalls rather than compiling all literature, as archiving was deactivated in 2015 for several journals that exemplify openness. Attesting to its success in this mission, Sci-Hub’s database already contains more toll access articles than are immediately accessible via the University of Pennsylvania, a leading research university.

The novel, narrated by Offred, alternates between text describing her present life and expository sections in which she recalls her past. Offred’s recollections reveal that she was the daughter of a feminist activist who had chosen to be a single mother. Before the advent of the theocratic government, the protagonist attended university and had a close friend named Moira. Offred became involved with a married man, Luke, and eventually she and Luke wed and had a daughter. Following a military coup in which the president and most members of Congress were killed, the country became the Republic of Gilead. One day the protagonist was fired from her job at the library because women were no longer permitted to work. That evening she learned that women were also not allowed to have money, and her bank account had been transferred to Luke. Eventually, Luke, the protagonist, and their daughter tried to flee to Canada but were caught, and she was sent to a reeducation centre for indoctrination in preparation for becoming a Handmaid. Moira was also at the reeducation centre, but she escaped.
In August 2016, the Association of American Publishers sent a letter to Gabriel J. Gardner, a researcher at California State University who has written papers on Sci-Hub and similar sites. The letter asked Gardner to stop promoting the site, which he had discussed at a session of a meeting of the American Library Association. [68] In response the publishing institution was highly criticized for trying to silence legitimate research into the topic, and the letter has since been published in full, and responded to by the dean of library services at Cal State Long Beach, who supported Gardner's work. Librarians often appear as the unwanted spectre at the open access to literature feast; urging restraint whilst others access research papers via Sci-Hub. Discussions on Twitter (most recently initiated by a George Monbiot article in The Guardian in which the journalist praises Sci-Hub for providing unrestricted access to research papers and recommends that people use the site) reflect conversations taking place in libraries and elsewhere in the wider community about whether use of Sci-Hub should be condoned or condemned.

In general, a journal’s coverage was either nearly complete or near zero ( Figure 3). As a result, relatively few journals had coverage between 5–75%. At the extremes, 2,574 journals had zero coverage in Sci-Hub, whereas 2,095 journals had perfect coverage. Of zero-coverage journals, 22.2% were inactive, and 27.9% were open access. Of perfect-coverage journals, 81.6% were inactive, and 2.0% were open access. Hence, inactive, toll access journals make up the bulk of perfect-coverage journals.
