We are left to presume that the formidable Richie Goulding has been snacking on otherworldly pets left and right. More notably, the missing twin girls who we ultimately discover were devoured by Richie Grenadine go by the surname Grady, just like the Grady twins from The Shining who were hacked up by their father, Delbert Grady. This playful connotation with Stephen King’s interconnected literary universe rightfully belongs in an episode that reverently acknowledges the original film’s screenwriter. The short story “Gray Matter” can be found in Night Shift, a collection of Stephen King stories.

This might be an actual sign in Wind Gap’s incredibly creepy hunting cabin, but it’s just as likely one of Camille’s hallucinatory images. She sees it as she and Richard explore the woods around the town.

A climactic emphasis of the severed doll head’s representation of Evie’s discomfort with growing into an adolescent (and, ultimately, adult) identity occurs when the head appears in the dollhouse bathroom mirror. This instance is a subtle yet pointed expression of the fear that abnormality and menace exist within the self. This thematic symbol is underscored when the Native American doll (enlisted by Evie to assist her doll family because he is the most “spiritual” doll in the shop) looks for the severed doll head in the same mirror.
The show’s visual hallucinations do more than scatter suggestions across the screen. They align us with Camille’s perspective, turning our vision of Wind Gap into her vision and undermining our ability to rely on anything we see as “real.” The hidden words of Sharp Objects are probably the most effective way I’ve seen a TV show achieve what would be called “ free indirect discourse” if it were a written text. In a novel, it’s the narrative act of making us believe what we’re reading comes from an impartial omniscient voice, even when it’s deeply embedded in one character’s point of view. The hidden words of Sharp Objects hold the same role, but because they seem like clues — and because we’re so primed to view any mystery as full of decipherable secrets — it’s easy to ignore that subtler purpose and get stuck on questions like, But why was “RUBBER” on that street sign?!

The series was met with a positive response from critics upon its premiere. On the review aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes, the series holds a 92% approval rating with an average rating of 8.14 out of 10 based on 118 reviews. The website's critical consensus reads, "A nearly unbearable slow burn, Sharp Objects maintains its grip with an unshakably grim atmosphere and an outstanding cast led by a superb Amy Adams." [39] Metacritic, which uses a weighted average, assigned the series a score of 78 out of 100 based on 41 critics, indicating "generally favorable reviews". [40]
I didn't necessarily cry because of the events in the book, although I will admit they were contributing factors, I cried because the book brought to mind situations and ideas and concepts that I have lived and am living that sometimes feel overwhelming. And this book made them real and made me look at them.

• The Science
From the first couple of pages, maybe even the first, I acknowledged my ass-umptions. The writing is astute in its observations, visceral in its descriptions. And the narrator is all messed up, which hear, hear. I actually stopped when I realized I'd read about 100 pages without looking away, and thought to myself: I should read more thrillers, huh? Well, no. Most of them that I have come across are not this confidently, this surgically composed. There is no fluffy stuffing here, just good, straight storytelling with the added bonus of cautiously crafted prose. Also, it's really fucking creepy, and me being creeped out by anything at this point in my life is a pretty tall order. I mean, aside from spiders and needles and being buried alive and over-sexualized pre-teen Lolita-types who collect and dress like that Bratz line of toy dolls. Now that shit is creepy. Fortunately, a couple of those things are directly addressed in this novel. My goodness, it must be terrifying having a daughter, or being an adult dude today. Or a human at all. Yeah, it is.

I love your work and I also really love David Fincher's work so I'm really glad you two are working together. It seems like the perfect union of dark and brilliant minds. What was it like collaborating with Fincher and what was the most interesting thing you learned from working with him? I'm guessing since you two are planning to team up again for Utopia, you both had a great experience working with each other.
Romanticism aside, the real reason that the show was scouting in the Peach State in the first place was because of the massive tax credit incentives offered up by Georgia. Blockbusters such as Avengers: Infinity War and Black Panther have been filmed here, and the move from LA to the South has been so great that the state of Georgia is now the biggest producer of films and TV shows in America.

Heather Novak (Natalie Paul of The Deuce), the detective-in-training assigned to investigate the deaths, reaches out to Ambrose, an old friend of her father (played by Coon’s husband Tracy Letts), and asks him to serve as a consultant on the case. That brings Ambrose to Keller, New York, the upstate scene of the crime and also his hometown — which, as sparing flashbacks sprinkled throughout the first three episodes indicate, contains a wellspring of troubling childhood memories. While grappling with those recollections, Harry tries to develop a bond with Julian and help Heather poke at the most relevant holes in the story of what happened in that hotel. Then a woman named Vera (Coon) enters the picture, and things get even more complicated. She walks into the Keller police station demanding to see Julian for one very important reason: She says she’s his mother.

Fahrenheit 451's final section finds Montag seizing his own fate for the first time. He avenges himself on Beatty and strikes out for the countryside. There he finds a resistance force of readers, each one responsible for memorizing—and thereby preserving—the entire contents of a different book. As they bide their time in hope of a better future, a flash appears on the horizon: While society was staring at full-wall television screens and medicating itself into a coma, the largest fire yet has broken out.

Montag runs through the city streets towards Faber's house. On his way, he crosses a wide road as a speeding car attempts to run him over, but he manages to evade the vehicle, and realizes he almost suffered the same fate as Clarisse. Faber urges him to make his way to the countryside and contact the exiled book-lovers who live there. He mentions he will be leaving on an early bus heading to St. Louis and that he and Montag can rendezvous there later. On Faber's television, they watch news reports of another Mechanical Hound being released to track down and kill Montag, with news helicopters following it to create a public spectacle. After wiping his scent from around the house in hopes of thwarting the Hound, Montag leaves Faber's house. He escapes the manhunt by wading into a river and floating downstream. Montag leaves the river in the countryside, where he meets the exiled drifters, led by a man named Granger. Granger shows Montag the ongoing manhunt on a portable battery TV and predicts that “Montag” will be caught within the next few minutes; as predicted, an innocent man is then caught and killed.

In 1954, Galaxy Science Fiction reviewer Groff Conklin placed the novel "among the great works of the imagination written in English in the last decade or more." [69] The Chicago Sunday Tribune's August Derleth described the book as "a savage and shockingly prophetic view of one possible future way of life", calling it "compelling" and praising Bradbury for his "brilliant imagination". [70] Over half a century later, Sam Weller wrote, "upon its publication, Fahrenheit 451 was hailed as a visionary work of social commentary." [71] Today, Fahrenheit 451 is still viewed as an important cautionary tale about conformity and the evils of government censorship. [72]

The sneakiest one of the episode: When Amma shows Camille her absolutely fantastic, uncanny Gothic miniature dollhouse version of Adora’s southern mansion, the word “girl” is briefly visible, scratched onto one of the perfect replicas of the house’s artwork. Based on the layout of the house, it hangs right outside Camille’s room.

I think this is one of those things that ended up an unintentional red herring for those of us who hadn't read the book. I imagine it's much less ambiguous in text because Camille is narrating it so there wouldn't be the same room for speculation that there is when the story is being told through visuals instead.

The second is this idea of love. The elusive love. I am not an outwardly affectionate person, it's not really my "scene", and so although this book may or may not be primarily a love story it still is one and it aches me so to see two people so perfectly and imperfectly in love. It brings up those thoughts of "Will someone ever love me like that?" "Will I ever find someone that I can love so importantly?" You can shrug it off, I'm only 18, calm down, it'll happen, but I can admit, and this is a deep thought of mine that I probably shouldn't share with the internet and yet here it is, that I fear never loving someone or being loved by someone (who, of course, is not my family). In the wide-ranging interview on the podcast, Flynn also discusses the way local mythology has been boosted from the book to the show. The Woman in White—a ghostly, witch-like figure who makes her first appearance in this episode—was inspired in small part by a real-life Missouri urban legend called Momo. That hairy yeti and the ghostly lady spotted by young eyewitness James Capisi have very little in common other than the way they serve to reflect the very real monsters that lurk in the shadows of every small town.

This novel, written by Ray Bradbury, takes place in a dystopian society where following government regulations are the social norm. Pleasure-seeking and distractions are the features of lifestyle where Montag lives. One cannot think, but can only indulge themselves from mindless entertainment because it requires minor distinctive thoughts. Characters such as Mildred, Beatty, and the majority conforms to the government because it is a normal act. On the other hand, individuality is not accepted as a social norm because they become threats as they question what life is and look for answers in books. People who show individuality are considered as outcasts of society and be put under government danger as …show more content… As the conversation carries on between Clarisse and Montag, she begins to notice that Montag is different. She claims “You 're not like the others. I 've seen a few; I know. When I talk, you look at me. When I said something about the moon, you looked at the moon, last night. The others would never do that. The others would walk off and leave me talking. Or threaten me. No one has time anymore for anyone else. You 're one of the few who put up with me...He felt his body divide itself into a hotness and a coldness, a softness and a hardness, a trembling and a not trembling, the two halves grinding one upon the other” (Bradbury 11). Clarisse points out the unique qualities to Montag because whenever they talk, Montag reacts by looking at her or objects that she is talking about. She reveals that the average people cannot comprehend the concept of socializing or reflect on thoughts thus they relapse to a state of violence as a resort to stop thinking. Clarisse doesn’t persuade Montag to think like her, but influence Montag to think outside the box and increase his curiosity. Clarisse’s character going against the common social conformity activates a rare phenomenon inside Montag’s mind. Montag was given two paths, hence the cold and hot or soft and hard. One Path guides Montag down the path of individuality and the other path leads him to the normal society life. Clarisse was an individual who opens the doors to Montag to let him

Let’s back up a bit. So, after Adora had been taken to prison for killing Marian, Amma went to live with Camille in St. Louis and things seemed to be going well despite all the chaos and trauma they’d both endured at the hands of their mother. That is, up until Camille looks at Amma’s (extremely creepy) dollhouse and finds human teeth hidden inside it—yes, the same teeth that had been pulled out of the mouths of Natalie and Ann, Amma’s former classmates. When Camille looks up, horrified, to find Amma standing in the doorway, Amma reverted back to her “innocent” persona and said, “Please don’t tell Mama.” And that was it.
