“Four mothers, four daughters, four families whose histories shift with the four winds depending on who’s “saying” the stories. In 1949 four Chinese women, recent immigrants to San Francisco, begin meeting to eat dim sum, play mahjong, and talk. United in shared unspeakable loss and hope, they call themselves the Joy Luck Club. Rather than sink into tragedy, they choose to gather to raise their spirits and money. “To despair was to wish back for something already lost. Or to prolong what was already unbearable.” Forty years later the stories and history continue.” 52. The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini

As mentioned before, the characters of the Street Fighter series are turned to several times throughout the film, and some more than once, but not all of them are used for instant recognition (as is the case with Chun Li in the final battle assault on anorak's castle. When Parzival arrives for his date with Art3mis and heads to the nearest bar, two Street Fighter stars make a cameo appearance directly behind them.
In the initial scan over the beginning of the Crystal Key battle, you can see Chun-Li unleashing her kicks of fury move, E Honda doing his belly flop and Sonic the Hedgehog performing his spin attack.
We used DOIs (Digital Object Identifiers) to uniquely identify articles. The Sci-Hub and LibGen scimag repositories also uniquely identify articles by their DOIs, making DOIs the natural primary identifier for our analyses. The DOI initiative began in 1997, and the first DOIs were registered in 2000 ( International DOI Foundation, 2017; Wang, 2007). Note that DOIs can be registered retroactively. For example, Antony van Leewenhoeck’s discovery of protists and bacteria — published in 1677 by Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of London ( van Leewenhoeck, 1677) — has a DOI (10.1098/rstl.1677.0003), retroactively assigned in 2006.

Zoombombing is when someone hijacks a session by displaying inappropriate material using their video camera or share-screen function. The ease with which you can join a Zoom meeting has exposed some security weaknesses in the Zoom software, including the ability for trolls to "crash the party" with an ill-gotten meeting ID (they're not hard to find). And in the unprecedented shift to online learning during the coronavirus pandemic, it didn't take long for student pranksters to discover the loophole created by the ability to share anything on their screens (including porn) to disrupt classes. These and other privacy and security issues led to bans on Zoom for schools, including the New York City Department of Education and the Berkeley Unified School District in California. Following these issues, Zoom released a series of privacy and security measures to address them. What are the safest settings for Zoom meetings?

K Sci-Hub blocks access to Russian IP addresses due to disputes with the Russian Scientific establishment and the naming of a newly discovered parasitoid wasp species, Idiogramma elbakyanae, after Alexandra Elbakyan ( Standish, 2017; Khalaim and Ruíz-Cancino, 2017). Four days later, Sci-Hub restores access after receiving “ many letters of support from Russian researchers”.
“I did not believe that it’s possible to win against such a well-funded, rich, and influential company,” says Elbakyan. Rather than fight the case, she’d just keep an eye on it from afar. Money aside, “I would have had to provide certain documents that potentially could have exposed me or my physical location.”

A teen girl sits on a teen boy's lap and they kiss and caress each other (she is wearing a top that is low-cut and reveals her shoulders and bare back). Two teen avatars and many others dance in a club and they embrace and dip; the girl asks the boy about the sensitivity of his suit and we see glowing handprints appear on his arm as she caresses him, and then on his chest and crotch and he flinches. With any new edtech tool, it's important that you consult your school or district administrator before jumping in. In addition, you'll need to make sure parents give consent for using Zoom and that they are fully aware of how it's going to be used and what protections you have in place for students. Under section 107 of the U.S. Copyright Act of 1976, the fair use of a copyrighted work is not copyright infringement. It includes reproductions for purposes such as “criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching (including multiple copies for classroom use), scholarship, or research." Given that Ready Player One is essentially a video game movie, though it doesn't adapt an actual video game property, general audiences may wonder where the title of the movie (and the book) comes from. Ernest Cline revealed the inspiration behind the movie's name in the featurette "Game Changer: Cracking the Code" on the movie's Blu-ray release. He said:

The OASIS also operates a lot like the real world in many respects, like how they make money. It may just cost a quarter to join, but once they have their hooks in your, one of their biggest money makers is "charging people for virtual fuel to power their virtual spaceships" (4.14). So the real world is in a real energy crisis, but somehow the OASIS manages to get people to shell out actual cash for fake fuel? That's some incredible persuasive power.

What is being asserted by the authors here is that Sci-Hub is launching password-cracking attacks *itself* and then using the credentials as a revenue source. Additionally they imply that someone from Sci-Hub planted (plants?) malware. Perhaps there is good evidence for these claims, but it isn’t in this article.

But what really killed it for me, what caused me to finally give up about halfway through, has always been a deal-breaker for me in any work of speculative fiction. I don't like books that seem to exist independently of the great body of work that has explored the same issues or ideas. In this case, it's as if the author has never heard of Tad Williams' Otherland or (despite the hero's homage to Stephenson) The Diamond Age and Snow Crash. These books (I except Stephenson's more recent book Reamde because it was released the same year as Ready Player One) raised and evaluated issues with virtual reality, and yet Ready Player One does a lot of unnecessary reinventing of the cybernetic wheel. And yes, I do think this is a valid criticism; science fiction is interconnected to a degree that trumps any other genre, except possibly experimental literary fiction. There's an expectation that readers will be familiar with concepts raised elsewhere and have more than a passing familiarity with other SF novels. Ready Player One doesn't do much more than revisit ideas that other authors have explored, and the addition of a high-tech fantasy quest (an admittedly very cool idea) isn't enough to elevate it beyond the ordinary. ...more
Any systems librarian can tell you of incidences where university-wide access has been “cut off” by publishers due to what is considered to be excessive downloading. As one publisher has explained, it is very difficult to determine genuine text and data mining activity from Sci-Hub “attacks” (their words). Significantly, UK Government advice relating to the text and data mining exception to copyright states that copyright owners are entitled to restrict access to their material if they feel the performance of their systems is being reduced by excessive downloading. There is no question that publishers have seized upon this advice (which has never been tested legally) as an excuse to threaten to cut off access to libraries where genuine text and data mining activities are performed.

I’ve never used Sci-Hub. Does anyone know for certain that *all* of the materials found on it are publicly funded? That is certainly not the case with other pirate sites, although these tend not to be associated exclusively with scientific articles (as opposed to books in the humanities, for example, many of which are not publicly funded – nor are their authors) the way Sci-Hub is. So I’m genuinely curious about this question. Writing as someone whose work is not publicly funded and is pirated, and who notices that a lot of discussions amongst people such as the readers of SC assume that everyone else receives public funding for their work the way they themselves do.

Each bar represents Sci-Hub’s coverage of articles in journals with the specified attributes, according to Scopus. Active refers to whether a journal still publishes articles. Open refers to whether a journal is open access. Subject area refers to a journal’s discipline. Note that some journals are assigned to multiple subject areas. As an example, we identified 588 neuroscience journals, which contained 1.8 million articles. Sci-Hub possessed 87.7% of these articles.

Sci-Hub has been lauded by some [7] in the scientific, academic, and publishing communities [8] for providing access to knowledge generated by the scientific community. Others have criticized it for violating copyright, [3] [9] threatening the economic viability of publishers, [10] potentially compromising universities' network security and jeopardizing legitimate access to papers by university staff. [11]
Sci-Hub obtains paywalled articles using leaked credentials. [2] [11] The source of the credentials used by Sci-Hub is unclear. [7] Some appear to have been donated, [2] some were apparently sold before going to Sci-Hub, [37] and some appear to have been obtained via phishing and were then used by Sci-Hub. [38] [11] Elbakyan denies personally sending any phishing emails and said, "The exact source of the passwords was never personally important to me." [7] According to The Scholarly Kitchen, a blog established by the Society for Scholarly Publishing whose members are involved in legal action against Sci-Hub, credentials used by Sci-Hub to access paywalled articles are correlated to access of other information on university networks (such as cyber spying on universities) and credential sales in black markets. [39] Several articles have reported that Sci-Hub has penetrated the computer networks of more than 370 universities in 39 countries. These include more than 150 institutions in the US, more than 30 in Canada, 39 in the UK and more than 10 in Sweden. The universities in the UK include Cambridge, Oxford, Imperial and King's College, London. I agree with @xvilka that there is lots of room for innovation and exploration, but even in the more traditional setting there is some movement coming from the smaller realities. It seems to me that the big publisher monopoly, which at least in my field is completely unjustified, is the bigger obstacle.

We managed our computational environment using Conda, allowing us to specify and install dependencies for both Python and R. We performed our analyses using a series of Jupyter notebooks. In general, data integration and manipulation were performed in Python 3, relying heavily on Pandas, while plotting was performed with ggplot2 in R. Tabular data were saved in TSV (tab-separated values) format, and large datasets were compressed using XZ. We used Git Large File Storage (Git LFS) to track large files, enabling us to make nearly all of the datasets generated and consumed by the analyses available to the public. The Sci-Hub Stats Browser is a single-page application built using React and hosted via GitHub Pages. Frontend visualizations use Vega-Lite ( Satyanarayan et al., 2017). Certain datasets for the browser are hosted in the greenelab/scihub-browser-data repository.
