Among the United States' most prominent and world renowned institutions are large research universities that are ranked in such annual publications such as the Times Higher Education World University Rankings, QS World University Rankings, U.S. News & World Report, Washington Monthly, ARWU, by test preparation services such as The Princeton Review or by another university such as the Top American Research Universities ranked by the University of Florida's The Center. [132] These rankings are based on factors such as brand recognition, number of Nobel Prize winners, selectivity in admissions, generosity of alumni donors, and volume and quality of faculty research. Among the top forty domestically and internationally ranked institutions identified by the QS 2020 rankings include six of the eight Ivy League schools; private universities Stanford, The University of Chicago, Johns Hopkins, Duke, Northwestern, and New York University; 2 of the 10 schools in the University of California system ( UC Berkeley and UCLA); and the research intensive institutions CalTech and MIT. [133] Other types of universities in the United States include liberal arts schools ( Reed College, Mount Holyoke College, Barnard College), religiously affiliated and denomination universities ( DePaul University, Brigham Young University, Yeshiva University), military ( United States Military Academy, United States Merchant Marine Academy, United States Naval Academy), art and design schools ( Berklee College of Music, Juilliard School, Fashion Institute of Technology, Parsons School of Design, Rhode Island School of Design), Historically black colleges and universities ( Morehouse College, Howard University, Kentucky State University), and for-profit universities ( University of Phoenix, Western International University, Liberty University). [134] While most private institutions are non-profit, a growing number in the past decade have been established as for-profit. The American university curriculum varies widely depending on the program and institution. Typically, an undergraduate student will be able to select an academic "major" or concentration, which comprises the core main or special subjects, and students may change their major one or more times.

Elbakyan also answered nearly every question I had about her operation of the website, interaction with users, and even her personal life. Among the few things she would not disclose is her current location, because she is at risk of financial ruin, extradition, and imprisonment because of a lawsuit launched by Elsevier last year.

Where a user donates their password to Sci-Hub, it is highly likely that the institution will be unaware of this, but it would still be liable. If an Authorised User donates their password without the subscriber being aware of it, the subscriber is still in breach because another clause will typically state “The Subscriber agrees to use all reasonable efforts to ensure the Authorised Users do not give their passwords or other access information to anyone else”. Clause 10.6 of the standard Jisc licence states “Nothing in this Licence shall make the Institution liable for breach of the terms of this Licence by any Authorised User provided that the Institution did not cause, knowingly assist or condone the continuation of such breach after becoming aware of an actual breach having occurred”, but unfortunately, many contracts libraries enter into with publishers do not include such a clause. One recommendation would be for all libraries to try to include such a Jisc-type clause with publishers in future.

Our final objection to Sci-Hub is its utter contempt for copyright law – and this is an important point. Ownership of copyright in a work gives the owner the exclusive right to certain “restricted acts” in respect of that work, and a copyright owner may authorise others to do those acts by licence. Elbakyan is scathing in her blog posts “about so-called copyright law” that was “created to make to taboo free distribution of information”. The fact is Sci-Hub is engaged in large-scale, blatant, and very public copyright infringement, and from an ethical standpoint librarians should support publishers’ efforts to get its services closed down, but not without arguing effectively and advocating for the alternatives at the same time.
Last year in a landmark American case, The Washington Post called “The Copyright Case that Should Worry all Internet Providers,” a court determined that the ISP Cox (a former head of its Abuse Group, even went so far as to say in one email “f the dmca!!!”) had flagrantly disregarded its responsibility to make some effort to enforce piracy. Thus, it didn’t qualify for the Digital Millennium Copyright Act’s so-called “ safe harbor” protection, which grants a measure of legal immunity to ISPs that make adequate efforts to curb piracy. Without that protection, Cox lost a lawsuit to the music rights group BMG, which had hired a third-party organization to levy fees from Cox customers found to be accessing accused piracy sites.

The intense Sci-Hub activity in East Lansing reveals yet another motivation for using the site. Most of the downloads seem to be the work of a few or even just one person running a “scraping” program over the December 2015 holidays, downloading papers at superhuman speeds. I asked Elbakyan whether those download requests came from MSU’s IP addresses, and she confirmed that they did. The papers are all from chemistry journals, most of them published by the American Chemical Society. So the apparent goal is to build a massive private repository of chemical literature. But why?

A few charity institutions cover all of the students' tuition, although scholarships (both merit-based and need-based) are widely available. Generally, private universities charge much higher tuition than their public counterparts, which rely on state funds to make up the difference. Because each state supports its own university system with state taxes, most public universities charge much higher rates for out-of-state students. [ citation needed]
This holiday is all about encouraging families to read together, and parents to actively engage in learning activities with their children. It might surprise you what you can learn from them and their favorite books!
Winner of the 2014 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, there's a good chance Donna Tartt's The Goldfinch already has a devoted space on your bookshelf . After Theo Decker's mother is killed in a bombing, the teenager is sent to live with a wealthy, Upper East Side family — a move that'll change his life forever. All that he has left to remember his mother by is a small, yet enthralling painting of a goldfinch. As an adult his love for art deepens, so much so that he finds himself wrapped up in the criminal underworld of New York. Navigating the complexities of life, loss, and art, this is a book that is well worth the hype.

ArXiv currently holds around 1,4 million articles and its costs for 2017 were around 1 million dollars. Call it a dollar a year to archive a paper (although this cost of course also includes some “publisher” services, such as a submission system and a very rudimentary editorial review by peer moderators). A world where publishers would charge something of that order of magnitude, is, I suspect, a world where Monbiot would never have written that opinion piece.
A stand-alone pre-prep, that goes from 3 or so to 7 or 8 years, may be a good bet if you are moving at short notice. Some of the children who join at 3 may move on at 4 or 5, so places do come up. The disadvantage is that they are, inevitably, obliged to spend quite a part of the upper years preparing children for 7+/8+ entrance exams.

Opposition to homeschooling comes from varied sources, including teachers' organizations and school districts. The National Education Association, the largest labor union in the United States, has been particularly vocal in the past. [126] Opponents' stated concerns fall into several broad categories, including fears of poor academic quality, and lack of socialization with others. At this time, over half of states have oversight into monitoring or measuring the academic progress of home schooled students, with all but ten requiring some form of notification to the state. It seems to me there are several issues being conflated by Pitts and DeMarco. I’ve seen enough evidence over the past few years to be convinced that Sci-Hub phished (and may continue to phish?). Given the scale of the operation, they are certainly also using credentials from the seedy underbelly of the clearnet and the darkweb.

The figure shows the number of articles in LibGen scimag, according to its TimeAdded field, for two database dumps. The number of articles added per day for the January 1, 2014 LibGen database dump was provided by Cabanac and corresponds to Figure 1 of ( Cabanac, 2016). Notice the major discrepancy whereby articles from the April 7, 2017 database dump were added at later dates. Accordingly, we hypothesize that the TimeAdded field is replaced upon modification, making it impossible to assess date of first upload. Sci-Hub’s catalog of articles Request a detailed protocol

What more will it take for this best-selling novel to make it to the big screen — or even to cable or streaming? The novel's film rights were sold years ago, and a smash theatrical adaptation already won the Tony for Best Play. This sweet, sad, beloved story of a 15-year-old boy on the autism spectrum investigating the death of a neighbor’s dog needs to get out of limbo. Our suggestion: Adapt the cathartic play for screen, cast go-to TV dad Ty Burrell as the single parent, and let’s get this thing made. —Joseph Longo

“Almost all the students at Heritage University rely on federal student aid – we’re a small non-profit university in the Yakima Nation with a student population that is 70% Latino and 15% Native American, and more than 90% are first-generation college students. The cuts to important grant and loan programs in the President’s budget – to TRIO, the maximum Pell grant, SEOG, among others – jeopardize students’ ability to obtain a college education, which today is a financial imperative.” – Andrew Sund, Ph.D., President, Heritage University, Toppenish, WA

Uganda’s success with PETS has been widely cited, but the experience is problematic for several reasons, and it has been difficult to replicate. 3a84369d70b6 The public information campaign in Uganda was possibly one of many factors – notably including political will – that allowed the PETS to succeed in reducing leakages. An attempt to replicate PETS in Tanzania met with less success, as the government questioned the methodology used to determine that leakages were happening. A related public financial information campaign, in which financial information was publicly displayed at local government level, also had limited success because it was too general and did not specify outputs or entitlements. cdc3627cf07c

Many students who are going to pursue their higher studies in the US must be surprised to know that the US has no educational system. The Federal government can influence education only by the funding it offers, but this is limited. Unlike CBSE board examinations in India, there is no national high school graduation examination. There are, however, state graduation examinations, and students must pass these.
